Around The NHL: Teams Making Early Moves

The action on the ice continues as the NHL season advances and there have already been a few unexpected changes this week.  Looking at how things are shaping up, it’s still going to be a long year for many teams and several need to find their mojo soon or they’re going to be relegated to the bottom of the list.  Without a doubt, there’s enough time left, but getting things in order now is going to make the difference.

The Detroit Red Wings didn’t do so hot last night against the Vancouver Canucks, which was expected.  They fell 5-2, which is probably two more goals than the team should have earned, and word got out before the game that the Red Wings had put Jonathan Ericsson on waivers.  That was insult to injury, since he had just come off injured reserve.  He had spent ten years with the team.  The team also recalled Evgeny Svenchinikov, and moved Alex Biega to Grand Rapids in return.

Luca Sbisa has bounced around from team to team since entering the league in 2008.  He’s been with the Flyers, Ducks, Canucks, Golden Knights and the Islanders and now has a new home.  After clearing waivers, the Winnipeg Jets picked him up after he had been signed by the Anaheim Ducks.  Across 504 games in the NHL, he has scored 18 goals with 85 assists and will be a welcome addition to the team.  He’s only in on a one-year contract, keeping up his pattern, but he can’t complain too much – it’s worth $750,000.

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers did a little shuffling Tuesday.  Ian McCoshen went to the Windy City, while Aleksi Saarela left the cold weather for the sunny beaches of South Florida.  That was his second move in three months, having gone from the Carolina Hurricanes to the Chicago squad in July.  He didn’t make it to the Carolina ice, though, being put in the Charlotte Checkers team.  Not happy with the move, he complained in August and Carolina decided he needed to go.  However, he didn’t perform up to par with the Blackhawks, who decided to drop him to the Panthers.

The New York Islands want some fresh talent and are reportedly looking at how to get rid of Josh Ho-Sang.  He’s currently in limbo, training with Toronto while he figures out how to leave the Islanders.  He is cleared from waivers and the 23-year-old is having some difficulty convincing a team to pick him up.  Since entering the league in 2014, he has scored just seven goals and 17 assists over three seasons.

The San Jose Sharks recently took on the Buffalo Sabres and to say things didn’t go as planned would be an understatement.  The team is off to a rather poor start this year, but had the chance to turn everything around against the Sabres.  Regular time ended with a tie, forcing the two into overtime, but the Sabres were able to secure the victory thanks to a critical Sharks mistake.  A line change with just under two minutes left in overtime left the net relatively uncovered, minus Martin Jones, and the Sabres were happy to take advantage of it.

More excitement comes tonight, but don’t expect any surprises.  The Red Wings will take on the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins are going up against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
