The NFL has arrived with its preseason games. However, last night’s contest between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers was enough to make everyone’s attention turn back to baseball, at least for now. MLB games are still producing solid gold and, until the NFL season gets truly underway, it will take center stage.
Mets Take on the Phillies
The New York Mets (56-52) will face the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in Citizens Bank Park. The road game has them chasing a win, as they have lost four of their last six and seven of their last ten. However, the Phillies (56-53) have been on a hot streak lately, picking up five straight wins. Overall, between these two teams, the Mets are better, at 8-5, but that may not be enough tonight.
Marcus Stroman is starting for the Mets after taking a 7-1 beating in his last start when he faced the Cincinnati Reds. Kyle Gibson is on the mound for the Phillies and just scored a massive 15-4 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two teams are even tonight, with both getting -110. However, playing at home and on a winning streak, plus a lineup that is second in WAR, the smart money goes to the Phillies. The 1.5 spread seems easy enough, especially since the Phillies are 13-4 against the spread at home. The MLB Over Under is at 9.5, but this gets a little tricky. It’s possible that the Over will hit and most of the money is headed that way, but an Under bet has a chance to pay out. The Mets have a lineup that is in the bottom ten in WAR and the Phillies bullpen hasn’t been consistent, possibly leading to a lack of runs.

It could be said that the New York Yankees (59-49) got lucky against the Seattle Mariners (58-42) last night. If not for a three-run homer by Joey Gallo, they could have lost 3-2. Since July 30, the Yankees are 6-1, but are still showing signs of inconsistency.
The Yankees host tonight and are starting with Wandy Peralta on the mound. He hasn’t pitched in a month after having been benched for COVID-19 issues, and will have his work cut out for him. Marco Gonzales will start for the Mariners and, with a 2.70 ERA since the All-Star break, has a lot to offer in tonight’s game. However, the Yankees are getting the support of oddsmakers at -190. Both teams are fighting for a wild card postseason spot and this is a tough call. However, the Yankees are likely to come out on top, and taking the Over on the Over/Under of 10.5 (-107) is a good way to go.
Tigers Look for Second Place in the AL Central
The Detroit Tigers (53-58) are 1.5 games behind the Cleveland Indians (52-54) in the AL Central race and are looking for a win tonight against the leader. They’re coming off an impressive thumping of the Boston Red Sox yesterday, a game that they won 8-1, and are 44-34 since May 7. The Indians, on the other hand, have been in a non-stop skid, ending with a 35-40 record due to a number of baseball injuries on the team.
Tonight’s game is the first of a three-game series between the two and, if the Tigers can win all three, they can pull ahead in the standings. That’s a lot to ask for, but stranger things have happened. The Indians are favored tonight, -137 to +127 on the moneyline, but the Tigers are getting more support for the win. The Over/Under sits at 9.5 (-120), and it’s hard to imagine this game picking up a lot of runs. Taking the Under is a good way to start the weekend betting.
