With NFL training camps set to begin in about two weeks, teams are looking to get their rosters filled as they prepare for the 2022 season. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the league this week:
Mayfield Looks Forward to Week 1 versus Browns
The Cleveland Browns finally completed their trade of Baker Mayfield, sending him to the Carolina Panthers for a conditional fifth-round draft pick last Wednesday. The pick could turn into a fourth-rounder depending on how much playing time he gets with his new team. The Panthers will play the Browns at home in the season’s opening game, and Mayfield has already marked the date on his calendar.
The former top pick in the 2018 draft, Mayfield was 29-30 as a starter for Cleveland and helped them reach the postseason in 2020 after finishing with an 11-5 record. They also had a victory in the playoffs over division rival the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last season, he threw for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns as the Browns failed to make the playoffs.

He will also probably be favored to win over his old team because of their uncertainty at the quarterback position. Seahawks Have Discussed Adding Garoppolo
QB Jimmy Garoppolo of the 49ers has an uncertain future regarding where he’ll play next season. He’s currently recovering from shoulder surgery but is expected to be available at the start of the regular season. However, it’s no secret that San Francisco is open to offers to move the quarterback. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, one of their biggest rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, has been considering adding him to their roster.
Trades within the same division aren’t a very popular move in the NFL, but he could also end up being cut by the 49ers and possibly signed as a free agent. Drew Lock is expected to win the starting job in Seattle with Geno Smith backing him up, but acquiring Garoppolo would likely vault him into the starting job. One thing that’s for sure is that the Niners won’t be keeping him on the roster as a backup to Trey Lance with his $25 million salary.
Schultz Still Without Long-Term Deal From Cowboys
As NFL training camp fast approaches, the Dallas Cowboys have yet to resolve the contract dispute with starting tight end Dalton Schultz. Sources indicate that the two sides are still far apart in the negotiations, and no new deal is imminent. Reaching an agreement before the July 15 deadline would be a miracle at this point, as Schultz says he hasn’t had contact with the team regarding an extension in several weeks.
Schultz has been placed under the franchise tag for the 2022 season by Dallas and will be on the field when the season starts. The tag will give him a salary of close to $11 million this season. Schultz believes he is one of the top tight ends in the NFL and wants to be compensated accordingly. Clearly, he wants to remain in Dallas but wants to get his finances in order and secure a long-term contract.
